Cross-Breeding for Improved Growth and Disease Resistance in the Eastern Oyster

چکیده

The Eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica, has historically supported a major fishery along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of North America. Although commercial landings of oysters along the East Coast have been in significant decline for decades, oyster aquaculture has the potential to provide for a sustained commercial harvest as well as to generate a product that is superior to wild-caught oysters. Traditional culture methods rely on the capture of wild spat or seed which are then moved to grow-out sites. Such culture methods are extensive and simply rely on the manipulation of wild stocks. The development of hatchery technologies for the production of oyster seed has alleviated some of the uncertainty inherent in natural supply of seed. In addition to sustaining a vital oyster aquaculture industry, the hatcherybased production of oyster seed allows for the development of genetically improved lines of oysters with characteristics substantially different from their wild ancestors.

IDENTIFICATION OF MOLECULAR MARKERS LINKED TO LEAF CURL VIRUS DISEASE RESISTANCE IN COTTON

The identification of molecular markers linked to leaf curl virus (CLCuV) disease resistance in cotton has the potential to improve both the efficiency and the efficacy of selection in cotton breeding programs. Genetic analysis suggested that CLCuV resistance is controlled by a single dominant gene. In this study, an interspecific F2 population derived from a cross of Gossypium barbadense and G...

Genetic improvement for disease resistance in oysters: A review.

Oyster species suffer from numerous disease outbreaks, often causing high mortality. Because the environment cannot be controlled, genetic improvement for disease resistance to pathogens is an attractive option to reduce their impact on oyster production. We review the literature on selective breeding programs for disease resistance in oyster species, and the impact of triploidy on such resista...

A Genome-Wide Association Study for Host Resistance to Ostreid Herpesvirus in Pacific Oysters (Crassostrea gigas)

Ostreid herpesvirus (OsHV) can cause mass mortality events in Pacific oyster aquaculture. While various factors impact on the severity of outbreaks, it is clear that genetic resistance of the host is an important determinant of mortality levels. This raises the possibility of selective breeding strategies to improve the genetic resistance of farmed oyster stocks, thereby contributing to disease...

Dna Fingerprinting of Commercial Mushrooms by Issr and Ssr Markers for Genetic Discrimination

Research for new improved varieties, with high increase in yields and quality with disease resistance is required today to make mushroom production highly productive.Increasing the yield and quality of crops as well as resistance to diseases are the primary goals for mushroom breeders and mushroom research. Breeders now use DNA molecular markers to identify and select specific genes to locate s...

Polymorphism in a serine protease inhibitor gene and its association with disease resistance in the eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica Gmelin).

Serine protease inhibitors (SPIs) are a superfamily of structurally related but functionally diverse proteins found in almost all organisms ranging from viruses to humans. Some of them play important roles in host defense. A recently identified SPI from the eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica), cvSI-1, has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of the Dermo pathogen Perkinsus marinus in vitr...
